The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE)

The United Grand Lodge of England is the governing body for all Freemasonry in England and Wales.

It is divided into 48 separate Provinces.  The Province of Durham follows the old County Durham boundaries so stretches from the Tyne to the Tees rivers.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations, rooted in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built cathedrals and castles.

Medieval stonemasons used handshakes, words and signs to show their qualifications and distinguish themselves from unqualified builders.

Freemasonry uses building analogies to encourage productive lives and stronger communities. Today, members build friendships and support their communities rather than cathedrals and castles.

Guiding principles of Freemasonry

Freemasons are guided by four core values: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service.

Integrity

Integrity means acting with honesty, honour and reliability, and being guided by strong principles.

Friendship

Freemasonry offers lifelong friendships, shared values and a strong sense of belonging.

Respect

Freemasonry respects different beliefs and backgrounds, promoting tolerance, inclusivity and harmony.

Service

Service is central to Freemasonry, with members giving their time, skills and resources to charitable and community causes.
